OpenAI is making a calculated move to embed ChatGPT deeper into everyday household life. The company has posted a job listing for a dedicated product manager based in San Francisco, tasked specifically with developing experiences tailored to families, caregivers, and older adults across its suite of products.

The role requires hands-on experience building consumer products for parents and families, particularly in trust-sensitive environments — a strong indicator that OpenAI is rethinking how its flagship AI assistant fits into the broader fabric of home life.

## A Shifting User Base Drives the Strategy

The timing of this hiring is no coincidence. Data from Sensor Tower, shared exclusively with TechCrunch, reveals a notable demographic transformation taking place within ChatGPT's user base. Globally, the proportion of ChatGPT users aged 35 and older climbed to 31% in Q2 of this year, up from 26% during the same period last year. Meanwhile, users between the ages of 18 and 24 dropped from 34% to 29% over the same timeframe.

The shift is equally pronounced among parents in the United States. Sensor Tower estimates that nearly one in four American smartphone users who are parents turned to ChatGPT during the second quarter — a significant jump from just 16% a year earlier.

## From Personal Productivity Tool to Household Technology

Industry analysts see this move as a pivotal evolution in how OpenAI conceptualizes its products. Ben Bajarin, CEO of technology consultancy Creative Strategies, noted that a dedicated family-focused product role signals that OpenAI is beginning to view ChatGPT less as a utility for individual productivity and more as a technology woven into the daily rhythms of households.

"This is similar to the path Google, Apple, and Meta eventually followed as their platforms became embedded in everyday life," Bajarin told TechCrunch. "But AI raises the stakes because the assistant is not just mediating content or devices."

Looking ahead, Bajarin anticipates that AI companies will introduce family subscription plans, age-specific user profiles for children and teens, caregiver tools, shared household memory features, AI-powered tutoring, and enhanced safety controls as the technology becomes multigenerational.

## Safety and Trust Take Center Stage

Expanding into family territory comes with significant responsibility. Stephen Balkam, CEO of the Family Online Safety Institute, described OpenAI's hiring move as a form of "safety by redesign" — an acknowledgment that products initially built without younger users in mind now need to be fundamentally rethought.

"You take the initial product or service that was released, not really with kids in mind, so this is a much-needed reaction and response," Balkam said.

His organization's latest research highlights just how urgent this issue has become. A survey of more than 4,000 families across the United States and Australia found a meaningful gap between parental awareness and actual usage: while 27% of U.S. parents believed their child had used generative AI in the past week, 38% of children reported having done so themselves.

Balkam emphasized that AI products designed for younger audiences must incorporate stronger content filters, age-appropriate interactions, robust parental oversight tools, and clear disclosures reminding users they are engaging with an AI — not a real person.

## OpenAI Faces Growing Legal and Regulatory Pressure

The company's push into family-oriented product development also comes against a backdrop of mounting legal challenges. OpenAI has faced several lawsuits from parents who allege that ChatGPT played a role in harm experienced by their children, including cases tied to self-harm and suicide.

In response, OpenAI has rolled out a series of protective measures over the past year. These include parental controls for teen accounts, a system that routes sensitive conversations to reasoning models better equipped to handle signs of emotional distress, and a newly introduced optional "Trusted Contact" feature that enables a designated family member or caregiver to be alerted when a user may be at risk of self-harm.

Balkam pointed out that AI companies now have a rare opportunity to course-correct before repeating the mistakes made by social media platforms, which spent years treating minors like adult users before regulators and public outcry forced their hand.

## Competitive Landscape Among AI Platforms

The demographic evolution is not exclusive to ChatGPT, though OpenAI appears to be gaining ground faster than some of its rivals in key segments. According to Sensor Tower, users aged 25 to 34 represent 40% of the global app audience for both Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini — matching ChatGPT — compared with 33% for Microsoft's Copilot.

Copilot skews notably older, with 20% of its users aged 45 and above, versus 14% for Claude, 12% for Gemini, and 11% for ChatGPT. However, ChatGPT is expanding its older user base more rapidly than competitors. The share of ChatGPT users aged 45 and above grew by three percentage points year-over-year in Q2, outpacing a two-point increase for Copilot, while both Claude and Gemini saw declines in that age group.

Among U.S. smartphone users who are parents, Google's Gemini currently leads with a 32% reach, followed by ChatGPT at 24%, Claude at 4%, and Copilot at 2%.

## OpenAI's Broader Community Engagement

Beyond product development, OpenAI has also been actively engaging with families through community initiatives. The company recently participated in a workshop organized in partnership with the San Antonio Spurs Community Impact organization and the Positive Coaching Alliance, exploring how AI can support learning, youth coaching, and community engagement.

These efforts collectively suggest that OpenAI's expansion into the family space is not simply a business development exercise — it reflects a broader reckoning with the social responsibilities that come with building technology that millions of people, including children, interact with every day.
