A sobering early estimate from leading researchers suggests that more than 2,700 people likely lost their lives to heat-related causes during the exceptionally hot weather that gripped England and Wales in May and June. The figure, produced by a collaborative team from Imperial College London, the Met Office, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, draws on established scientific understanding of the lethal risks associated with extreme heat.
Record-Shattering Temperatures Drove Fatal Conditions
Researchers believe the majority of heat-related fatalities occurred during the June heatwave, which officially became the warmest June ever recorded in England. Temperatures surged to 37.7°C (99.9°F) at Lingwood in Norfolk, decisively breaking the previous June record of 35.6°C set back in 1957. Authorities responded by issuing a rare red heat alert across parts of England and Wales — a warning level that signals a significant risk to life even for otherwise healthy individuals.
The study breaks the estimated death toll into two distinct periods. Approximately 550 people are believed to have died from heat exposure between May 21 and 29, while close to 2,200 more are estimated to have perished during the June heatwave between the 18th and 28th of that month. May itself set records, with Kew Gardens recording a new UK high of 35.1°C on May 26 — a dramatic jump from the previous benchmark of 32.8°C, which dated back to 1922.
Climate Change Amplified the Danger
Both heatwave events were driven by what meteorologists call a "heat dome" — a stalled high-pressure system that effectively traps hot air over a region for extended periods. Experts emphasize that human-induced climate change significantly worsened the intensity of these heat domes. With the planet now approximately 1.4°C warmer than pre-industrial levels, scientists calculate that climate change added between 3°C and 4°C to the peak temperatures recorded across both months.
Compounding the misery, tropical nights — where temperatures remain uncomfortably high after dark — deprived people of the overnight relief they desperately needed to recover.
Why the UK Is Especially Vulnerable
A significant portion of British housing stock was simply not designed with extreme heat in mind, leaving millions of residents poorly equipped to cope with prolonged high temperatures. The physical toll of intense heat is considerable: the body's cardiovascular system is forced to work overtime, with the heart pumping harder and faster in an effort to regulate core temperature. Dehydration accelerates this strain dramatically.
Certain groups face a heightened risk, including infants, elderly individuals, and those managing pre-existing health conditions. Extreme heat is known to trigger more frequent heart attacks, strokes, and other life-threatening medical emergencies. Experts often refer to heatwaves as a "silent killer" precisely because the early warning signs — such as fatigue, mild dizziness, or slight confusion — are easy to dismiss or overlook.
Humidity compounds the risk further. When the air is both hot and moist, as it was during June, the body's primary cooling mechanism — sweating — becomes far less effective.
Professor Fredi Otto, a climate science expert at Imperial College London involved in the research, issued a stark warning: "Don't underestimate the risks. Just because you're fit and healthy, you're not safe."
Behavioral Change Could Save Lives
The research team used historical death records to model how mortality figures during May and June 2026 might compare to previous years. While the methodology involves certain assumptions about the degree to which people were impacted, the team hopes the findings prompt real behavioral change.
Dr. Clair Barnes, an extreme weather and climate change specialist at Imperial College London, offered a candid perspective: "If by putting out these estimates we highlight to people how dangerous it is and they change their behaviour next time there's a heatwave and our estimates turn out to be high, I will be thrilled. These are big numbers and we don't want to see this many people dying."
Notably, 2025 was anticipated to be a particularly deadly year for heat-related illness, yet actual fatalities came in at roughly half the projected 3,039 — a result that the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) attributed in part to the effectiveness of heat health alerts and coordinated action across the NHS and social care systems.
A Warming Future Demands Urgent Adaptation
Looking ahead, some researchers warn that heat-related deaths across parts of northern Europe could begin to approach the levels currently associated with cold weather within just a few decades — though they stress this trajectory depends heavily on the pace of global emissions reductions and how effectively nations adapt their infrastructure and public health systems.
One thing is clear: as greenhouse gas emissions continue to accumulate in the atmosphere, heatwaves will become more frequent, more intense, and longer in duration. The human cost, if action is not taken, stands to rise accordingly.
