Tuchel Backs His Decisions as James Misses Panama Showdown

England manager Thomas Tuchel has publicly defended his full-back selection strategy following confirmation that Chelsea right-back Reece James will not feature in Saturday's World Cup Group L encounter against Panama (22:00 BST) due to a hamstring injury.

James was flagged for medical assessment after England's goalless draw with Ghana on Tuesday, having reported discomfort in his hamstring. The defender has since remained behind while the squad travelled to New Jersey from their Kansas City base ahead of the Panama fixture.

James a Doubt for Knockout Stages

While Tuchel expressed optimism that James could return for England's last-32 clash next week, BBC Sport understands the situation is more concerning than initially suggested. The Chelsea full-back is considered a significant doubt for the start of the knockout rounds — though England have already secured their progression, even if they were to finish third in their group.

James' absence compounds an already difficult situation at full-back. Tino Livramento was forced to return home earlier in the tournament due to a calf problem, leaving Tuchel's right-back options looking severely stretched.

Questions Mount Over Squad Depth at Full-Back

Tuchel opted to bring only three recognised full-backs to the tournament — James, Livramento, and Djed Spence. With two of those now unavailable, the decision is attracting scrutiny.

Nico O'Reilly is present in the squad and did operate at left-back for Manchester City last season, though he is primarily regarded as a midfielder. Dan Burn, meanwhile, has experience at left-back but is fundamentally a centre-back. Spence, along with central defenders Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa, represents Tuchel's remaining cover at right-back.

Despite the mounting pressure, Tuchel remained resolute in his stance:

"Yes, I am happy with my options at right-back. I selected the team, so I'm very happy with everything — the characteristics of the players and the strengths they bring. We would love to have every key player available, but when that's not possible, we find solutions. It's a tournament, we move on."

Tuchel Confident James Will Return

Both James and Livramento carry well-documented injury histories, and the manager's decision to include both players in his World Cup roster is likely to face further scrutiny going forward. Nevertheless, Tuchel maintained confidence that James would feature at some point during the tournament.

"It's a minor hamstring issue — he hasn't been able to train for the last two days," Tuchel explained. "He's now on an accelerated rehabilitation programme, and we're taking it game by game. But we strongly believe he will be available before the tournament is over."

Positive News on Saka, Rice, and Anderson

Amid the injury concerns, Tuchel delivered some encouraging updates ahead of the Panama match. Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, and Elliot Anderson are all expected to be available for selection.

Rice, managing a calf complaint, and Anderson, dealing with a glute issue, both missed Thursday's training session but returned to the training pitch on Friday. Saka is set for a potential starting role after coming on as a substitute in England's first two group games while managing a long-standing Achilles tendinitis problem.

With qualification already secured, Tuchel will be hoping for a positive result against Panama while keeping a close eye on the fitness of his key personnel ahead of the knockout rounds.
