O'Sullivan Targets History at the Crucible

Snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan will launch his quest for an unprecedented eighth World Snooker Championship title when he faces Chinese newcomer He Guoqiang in the opening round at Sheffield's iconic Crucible Theatre. The 50-year-old, who shares the modern-era record of seven world titles with Stephen Hendry, begins his first-round encounter on Tuesday, with the match concluding on Wednesday.

He Guoqiang, ranked 47th globally, earned his place on snooker's grandest stage for the very first time after defeating England's Jack Lisowski during qualifying at the English Institute of Sport. Sixteen qualifiers in total successfully navigated the preliminary rounds to join the world's top 16 ranked players in the main draw.

Defending Champion Zhao Xintong Opens Saturday's Play

Reigning world champion Zhao Xintong, who made history in 2025 by becoming the first Chinese player to lift the world title, kicks off the tournament on Saturday at 10:00 BST. The top seed faces England's Liam Highfield, who impressively battled through four qualifying rounds to secure his spot at the Crucible.

The full draw was revealed live on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast on Thursday morning.

Star-Studded First-Round Lineup

The 2026 edition promises no shortage of compelling matchups across the draw:

  • World number one Judd Trump opens against Gary Wilson
  • Masters champion Kyren Wilson faces 19-year-old debutant Stan Moody
  • Four-time champion John Higgins takes on two-time finalist Ali Carter
  • Four-time Crucible winner Mark Selby meets 2024 runner-up Jak Jones
  • Former champion Shaun Murphy is drawn against China's Fan Zhengyi
  • Ding Junhui battles David Gilbert
  • Former world number one Mark Allen faces Zhang Anda

Two previous Crucible finalists, Barry Hawkins and Matthew Stevens, will meet each other in what promises to be a fascinating clash, while Iran's Hossein Vafaei takes on Si Jiahui and 2010 champion Neil Robertson faces Pang Junxu.

The two other first-time Crucible participants — England's Liam Pullen and Poland's Antoni Kowalski — are drawn against Chris Wakelin and three-time champion Mark Williams respectively.

Robertson's Take on the Draw

Australian great Neil Robertson spoke enthusiastically about his opening assignment and several standout ties. "Pang is a really good player, a great talent with an all-around game and a very calm temperament," Robertson said. "We met at the UK Championship this season and I came out on top, so hopefully I can do that again here."

Robertson also highlighted the Selby vs. Jones match as one to watch: "That will be a tough, tough game. There are some brilliant matches — Ali Carter against John Higgins will be another really great one."

Record Chinese Representation at the Crucible

This year's tournament sets a new benchmark for Chinese participation, with 11 players from China featuring in the 32-player field — surpassing last year's record of 10. Among those, two all-Chinese first-round ties are scheduled: Xiao Guodong versus Zhou Yuelong and Wu Yize against Lei Peifan.

Tournament Details and Crucible's Future

The 17-day championship gets underway on Saturday, with the final commencing on Sunday, 3 May and wrapping up the following day. The BBC will broadcast full live coverage throughout the event.

The Crucible has proudly hosted the World Snooker Championship every year since 1977, and last month it was confirmed the venue will continue as the tournament's home until 2045. Plans are also in place to redevelop the Sheffield theatre, adding up to 500 extra seats to enhance the atmosphere for fans in future years.
