Hannah Hampton's Stunning Saves Carry England to Victory Over Iceland
Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton pulled off four vital second-half saves to secure England's narrow 1-0 win over Iceland, keeping their World Cup qualifying campaign perfect.
Hannah Hampton Delivers When It Matters Most
England's goalkeeper Hannah Hampton proved once again that she is among the best in the world, producing a string of breathtaking saves to help the Lionesses grind out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Iceland at Laugardalsvollur Stadium on Saturday.
Despite controlling much of the contest, England found themselves under increasing pressure during a nervy second half — and it was Hampton who stood firm between the posts to preserve all three points.
Russo Strikes, Hampton Protects
The only goal of the match came courtesy of Arsenal striker Alessia Russo, whose composed first-half finish proved to be the decisive moment of the evening. However, Iceland's relentless second-half pressure meant that result was far from certain until the final whistle.
Hampton made four saves in total — all coming after the break — as Iceland pushed desperately for an equaliser. She scrambled brilliantly to deny Dilja Zomers' effort from ricocheting in off the far post, then showed impressive athleticism to stop Sveindis Jonsdottir at close range. The Chelsea stopper also came agonisingly close to a costly error, fumbling the ball near the path of an onrushing attacker before recovering just in time.
Defenders Niamh Charles and Lucy Bronze also played their part, combining to clear two goal-bound efforts off the line during Iceland's late surge, with Bronze's intervention proving critical as Sandra Jessen looked set to equalise.
Hampton's Humble Response
Despite the drama, Hampton was characteristically modest when speaking to reporters after the final whistle.
"It's my job isn't it really? We are in it as a team. I can't be the one scoring goals, but I can stop them," she told ITV. "We win as a team and that is what we pride ourselves on."
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, she kept things light-hearted: "Alessia puts the ball in one end and I stop it going in at the other. It's a simple game when you break it down. I'm always willing to put my body on the line."
Wiegman Full of Praise
England head coach Sarina Wiegman was far less understated in her assessment of Hampton's contribution, describing her saves as absolutely "crucial" to the result.
"It's really nice to have a goalkeeper that stops the ball going in — especially when the team is struggling," said Wiegman. "That's called teamwork. She showed again that she is a world-class goalkeeper."
Russo echoed those sentiments, adding: "She was amazing. Big moments kept us in it and she showed up three or four times to get us the three points. Sometimes you need someone to step up like that."
A Seamless Transition from Earps
The match in Iceland came just days after Hampton produced another outstanding performance in England's 1-0 win over Spain on Tuesday, where an acrobatic late stop denied Edna Imade and secured a vital victory.
Prior to the Iceland match at Wembley, former England number one Mary Earps had been honoured for her celebrated international career — but Hampton has stepped seamlessly into the role, impressing at Euro 2025 and continuing that form into World Cup qualifying.
Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis summed it up perfectly on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra: "If anyone thought Hampton was just good at the Euros — she has been consistently brilliant ever since. She won it for England on Tuesday, and she kept the game in England's advantage today. Brilliant concentration from her."
Ex-England defender Anita Asante noted that Hampton's ability gives the entire squad greater confidence going into high-stakes qualifiers. "That's what goalkeepers are there for, to bail out the defence when they get exploited," she told ITV.
England's World Cup Dream Stays Alive
With four wins from four matches, England sit at the top of their Women's World Cup qualifying group, with automatic qualification still very much within their grasp.
Their next major test comes on 5 June when they travel to face Spain — the reigning world champions who demolished Ukraine 5-0 on the same evening. Hampton and her teammates will need to be at their very best if they are to maintain their grip on top spot and continue their march toward next year's World Cup.
