Hannah Hampton's Brilliant Saves Rescue England in Nervy 1-0 Victory Over Iceland
Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton pulled off four stunning second-half saves to keep England's perfect World Cup qualifying record intact against Iceland.
Hampton Steps Up as England Survive Scare in Iceland
England secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Iceland on Saturday evening, but the result could have looked very different without the heroics of goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who delivered a match-defining performance when her side needed her most.
The Lionesses were firmly in the driving seat at the break, with Alessia Russo's first-half strike appearing to put England on course for a routine win. However, the second half told an entirely different story, as Iceland grew into the game and began pushing for an equaliser that almost came on multiple occasions.
Four Saves, Four Crucial Moments
Hampton made all four of her saves in the second half, repeatedly coming to England's rescue as Iceland mounted a spirited fightback. She scrambled brilliantly across her goal to prevent Dilja Zomers' shot from bouncing in off the far post, leapt sharply to deny Sandra Jessen at close range, and produced a string of clutch interventions that kept the scoreline intact.
Despite a less-than-perfect overall display — Hampton was unconvincing on crosses and set-pieces throughout the match and nearly fumbled the ball into a dangerous position late on — she demonstrated the composure and quality that separates good goalkeepers from great ones when the pressure peaked.
Speaking to ITV after the final whistle, Hampton remained refreshingly modest about her contribution.
"It's my job, isn't it really? We are in it as a team. I can't be the one scoring goals, but I can stop them," she said. "We win as a team and that is what we pride ourselves on. We are a pack."
Hampton also shared a light-hearted take on her role in the victory when speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, joking: "Alessia puts the ball in one end and I stop it going in at the other. It's a simple game when you break it down. I'm always willing to put my body on the line."
Wiegman Full of Praise for World-Class Keeper
England manager Sarina Wiegman was far less understated in her assessment, describing Hampton's saves as "crucial" to clinching all three points.
"It is always a team effort and a team performance, but it is really nice to have a goalkeeper that stops the ball going in — especially when it's really hard for the team," Wiegman said. "She showed again that she is a world-class goalkeeper."
StrikerAlessia Russo echoed those sentiments, crediting Hampton for keeping the result in England's favour during Iceland's relentless second-half pressure.
"She was amazing. Big moments kept us in it and she showed up three or four times to get us the three points," Russo said. "Sometimes you need someone to step up like that."
Hampton Filling Earps' Boots With Authority
Hampton's outstanding display in Reykjavik follows an equally impressive performance against Spain on Tuesday, where her acrobatic late save to deny Edna Imade proved pivotal in another 1-0 win for the Lionesses.
Prior to kick-off at Wembley that evening, England legend and former number one Mary Earps was honoured for her extraordinary service to the national team. But Hampton has wasted no time in making the position her own, delivering standout performances at Euro 2025 and now producing the goods in high-stakes World Cup qualifying fixtures.
Former England goalkeeper Rachel Brown-Finnis was effusive in her praise on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra, saying: "If anyone thought Hampton was just good at the Euros — she has been consistently brilliant ever since. She won it for England on Tuesday, and she kept the game in England's advantage today. Brilliant concentration from her."
A Team Effort Behind the Result
While Hampton rightly claimed the headlines, the victory was not solely down to her individual brilliance. Defenders Niamh Charles and Lucy Bronze also made vital goal-line clearances during Iceland's late surge, with Bronze in particular producing a crucial intervention after Hampton had blocked Alexandra Johannsdottir's effort, only for Sandra Jessen's touch to take her around the keeper before Bronze cleared the danger.
Ex-England defender Anita Asante highlighted the wider impact Hampton's presence has on the squad, telling ITV: "That's what goalkeepers are there for, to bail out the defence when they get exploited. Her ability gives the team confidence in these big World Cup qualifiers."
England Keep Qualification Firmly in Their Hands
The result keeps England at the summit of their World Cup qualifying group, with four wins from four matches maintaining a perfect record. Automatic qualification for next year's World Cup remains firmly within their grasp.
The next major test arrives on 5 June, when England face a daunting trip to Spain — a world-class side that hammered Ukraine five goals to nil on the same evening England were battling to hold off Iceland. Hampton and her teammates will need to be at their very best if they are to maintain their position at the top of the table and take another significant step toward World Cup qualification.
