Fletcher Criticizes FA Over Youth Cup Final Handling
Manchester United's Under-18 head coach Darren Fletcher has launched a sharp criticism at the Football Association, claiming the governing body allowed Manchester City to effectively commandeer the FA Youth Cup final in a way that was wholly inappropriate for such a prestigious competition.
United fell to a 2-1 defeat against City at Joie Stadium, capping off a frustrating end to the season for the Red Devils' academy setup.
A Difficult End to the Season for United's Youth Teams
The Youth Cup final loss was not the only blow for United's younger squads. Fletcher's side also suffered defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League Under-18 Cup, losing on penalties after conceding a last-gasp equaliser in normal time. To compound matters further, United finished as runners-up to City in the Premier League North standings.
Despite acknowledging that Oliver Reiss' City outfit were the superior side on the night, Fletcher made clear his frustration was directed at the Football Association and the broader circumstances surrounding the final.
Venue Decision Sparks Controversy
A significant point of contention centred on the choice of venue. Manchester United had proposed hosting the final at Old Trafford, but City declined the offer, citing ongoing construction works at the Etihad Stadium as the reason it could not be held there. As a result, Joie Stadium — City's 7,000-capacity ground used primarily by their academy and women's teams and located next to the Etihad — was selected as the host venue.
United academy staff were reportedly frustrated by this outcome, feeling that players from both clubs were denied the experience of competing in a showpiece final at a more suitable and iconic venue.
Adding to the awkwardness, despite Manchester City announcing the match as a sell-out, large sections of the home areas were visibly empty on the night, even though the United end was packed. The game attracted the attention of both clubs' first-team managers, with Pep Guardiola and Michael Carrick both in attendance.
Fletcher Unhappy With Post-Match Presentation Atmosphere
Fletcher's frustration extended beyond the venue debate. He took particular issue with what he described as an excessive and over-the-top medal ceremony, during which City's players and coaching staff were individually announced as they received their winners' medals from EFL chairman Rick Parry.
"I'm disappointed in the FA for everything that's gone around this game — the location, everything," Fletcher stated.
"You have to respect the opposition. But not when Man City take over an FA Youth Cup. It's an FA competition. It should never have been like that."
He continued: "I've never heard individual coaches and every individual player be shouted out like that. That doesn't happen in cup finals. It felt like a Man City competition throughout the whole build-up and at the end. That's my one gripe for tonight. But the best team won — compliments to them."
Reports indicate that Fletcher expressed his displeasure loudly and directly to FA officials during the post-match presentations.
Scheduling Concerns Add to Fletcher's Frustration
Beyond the final itself, Fletcher also raised concerns about the scheduling of upcoming youth fixtures. The Premier League 2 play-off final, involving Under-21 players, is set to take place at Brighton's Amex Stadium on Saturday evening with a 19:30 BST kick-off — just 48 hours after the Youth Cup final. The match forms part of a double-header alongside a Women's Super League fixture at the same venue.
The tight turnaround creates real selection headaches for Fletcher, with several players who featured in the Youth Cup final also being key figures in the PL2 setup. Furthermore, any young players in line to feature in United's Premier League fixture against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday lunchtime are unlikely to be risked in the midweek showdown.
"We're dealing with a lot of difficult dynamics just now in terms of these youth fixtures, which is disappointing," Fletcher admitted.
"With the Under-21s game being 48 hours after this, some of our players aren't going to experience that. Hopefully people take a step back and reflect — there's a lot of learning to be done for the Premier League and the FA when it comes to these historic competitions."
Manchester City chose not to respond to Fletcher's comments.
