Baseball Hall-of-Famer Turned Politician: Teixeira Wins Texas GOP Primary

Former Major League Baseball standout Mark Teixeira has taken a commanding step toward Capitol Hill, securing the Republican nomination for Texas's 21st Congressional District. In a competitive 12-candidate primary field, Teixeira earned more than 61% of the vote — a strong enough margin to avoid a runoff and lock in his place as the Republican standard-bearer heading into November's general election.

Filling a High-Profile Vacancy

The seat Teixeira is pursuing is currently held by Rep. Chip Roy, a prominent conservative voice who has announced plans to exit Congress and pursue the Texas attorney general's office instead. Teixeira formally entered the race last August, just days after Republican state legislators approved a new redistricting map designed to consolidate GOP strength ahead of the 2026 election cycle.

The 21st Congressional District stretches across a deeply conservative swath of Texas located west of Austin and San Antonio, making it fertile ground for a Republican candidate with name recognition and financial backing.

Trump Endorsement and Major PAC Support Fuel Campaign

Teixeira's primary run received a significant boost from President Donald Trump, who threw his official endorsement behind the former first baseman. On the campaign trail, Teixeira aligned himself firmly with the administration's agenda, pledging to partner with the president on border security and vowing to combat what he characterized as "radical woke indoctrination."

Financial support also played a pivotal role. The Club for Growth PAC, along with its affiliated super PACs, funneled more than $250,000 into Teixeira's campaign. Club for Growth PAC President David McIntosh praised the outcome, stating the organization was "proud to have supported Teixeira in the race."

"On the campaign trail, Mark Teixeira outlined his plan to lower taxes, cut red tape, and expand school freedom for every family in Texas. Voters believed in his vision, and rewarded him with the Republican nomination," McIntosh said.

Teixeira's Decorated MLB Career

Before entering the political arena, Teixeira built one of the most respected careers in modern baseball. Selected fifth overall in the 2001 MLB Draft, he launched his professional journey with the Texas Rangers — the same state where he would later seek public office. Over 14 seasons in the majors, he earned three All-Star selections, five Gold Glove Awards, and three Silver Slugger honors. The crown jewel of his playing career came in 2009 when he captured a World Series championship with the New York Yankees.

After retiring from baseball, Teixeira returned to Texas in 2021 with his family, eventually setting his sights on a new chapter in public service.

What Comes Next: A November Showdown

In Tuesday's primary, Teixeira bested fellow Republican Daniel Betts, who previously ran an unsuccessful campaign for Travis County district attorney. On the Democratic side, Dr. Kristin Hook led her primary field with approximately 61% of the vote, positioning herself as the likely Democratic nominee for the general election matchup in November.

Teixeira celebrated his primary victory with enthusiasm, calling it a "huge victory" and setting his sights firmly on the fall contest.

"We're going to run a strong race and win big in November, then hit the ground running to fight for Texas families," Teixeira said in his victory statement. "Thank you again, TX-21. God bless Texas, and God bless America."
