Universal Pictures Is Developing a Bon Jovi Biopic Covering the Band's Explosive Rise to Fame
Universal Pictures is bringing the Bon Jovi story to the big screen, focusing on the band's humble New Jersey roots and their iconic 1980s breakthrough.
Universal Pictures Sets Bon Jovi Biopic in Motion
Universal Pictures is officially developing a feature film biography centered on legendary rock band Bon Jovi, as confirmed by Deadline. The project will chronicle the group's journey from their scrappy beginnings in New Jersey to becoming one of the most electrifying and commercially dominant rock acts of the 1980s.
What the Film Will Cover
The biopic will spotlight the band's formative years, tracing how a group of young musicians from modest backgrounds transformed themselves into global rock icons. The story is expected to build toward the band's explosive commercial breakthrough and culminate with their legendary appearance at the 1989 Moscow Music Peace Festival, where they performed before a crowd of roughly 100,000 fans.
Key milestones along the way include the 1986 release of Slippery When Wet, the album that catapulted Bon Jovi into superstardom and delivered back-to-back US chart-toppers in Livin' on a Prayer and You Give Love a Bad Name.
Jon Bon Jovi's Early Days
Before fame came calling, a teenage Jon Bon Jovi worked as an assistant at New York's prestigious Power Station recording studio. It was there that he found himself surrounded by music royalty — including Mick Jagger and Diana Ross — an experience that helped shape his ambitions and fuel his drive toward stardom.
The Creative Team Behind the Project
The film will be produced by acclaimed producer Kevin J. Walsh, whose credits include Manchester By the Sea and House of Gucci, alongside Gotham Chopra, the director behind the 2024 four-part documentary Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. Los Angeles-based screenwriter Cody Brotter has been tapped to write the script.
Chopra's previous documentary work with the band explored not only their triumphs but also the more difficult chapters in their history — including struggles with addiction among band members and Jon Bon Jovi's vocal cord surgery, a health crisis that briefly cast doubt over whether he would ever sing again. The Guardian described the documentary as "a surprisingly devastating rumination on lost youth."
A Legacy Worth Celebrating on Screen
With over 130 million albums sold worldwide and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, Bon Jovi's cultural footprint is undeniable. Their multi-decade career has cemented their place among rock music's all-time greats.
Who Will Play Jon Bon Jovi?
While no casting announcements have been made, Jon Bon Jovi himself has already been thinking about the question. In a 2025 interview, the rock legend revealed that watching Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere got him thinking about who should portray him on screen. His personal top pick? His own son, Jake Bongiovi — an emerging actor who appeared alongside Kiernan Shipka in the 2024 romantic comedy Sweethearts.
Official casting details are yet to be confirmed, and fans will no doubt be watching closely as the project continues to take shape.
