Utah Community Shaken After Three Women Found Dead Along Hiking Trail and Inside Residence

A quiet rural community in southern Utah was left reeling after three women were discovered dead at separate locations within Wayne County on March 4, prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place warning and triggering a multi-state manhunt that ended with the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect.

Bodies Discovered at Multiple Crime Scenes

According to the Utah Department of Public Safety (DPS), which joined local agencies in the investigation, the three victims were found at different locations across Wayne County — a region that includes the popular tourist destination of Torrey. Authorities were first alerted when the husbands of two of the women reported their wives unresponsive along a hiking trail. A third victim was later found deceased inside a county residence.

The three women were reported to be in their 30s, 60s, and 80s respectively. Officials have not yet publicly released the identities of the victims.

Suspect Identified and Tracked Across Three States

Law enforcement quickly identified 22-year-old Ivan Miller of Blakesburg, Iowa, as the primary suspect. Lt. Cameron Roden of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office confirmed during a Thursday morning press conference that investigators used license plate readers to track Miller as he fled the area in a vehicle belonging to one of the victims — a 2022 white Subaru Outback with license plate U560YF.

The vehicle's route took it through southern Utah, into northern Arizona, and eventually into Colorado, where it was discovered abandoned in the town of Pagosa Springs. Local law enforcement in Colorado located Miller shortly after and took him into custody following a brief search.

Miller was booked into the Archuleta County Detention Center, where jail records indicate he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon.

Sevier County Sheriff Confirms Capture

The Sevier County Sheriff's Office issued a statement via social media confirming that "a suspect in the Wayne County homicides was captured early this morning," bringing some relief to a community that had been living in fear throughout the ordeal.

While authorities have not publicly explained the specific evidence linking all three killings, investigators believe the homicides are connected. Notably, officials do not believe Miller had any prior relationship with any of the victims.

Community Takes Precautionary Measures

The investigation sent shockwaves through the surrounding region. The Wayne County School District canceled classes on both Thursday and Friday out of caution, and two local health clinics temporarily shut their doors while the manhunt was still active.

Authorities in neighboring Garfield County also urged residents to lock their doors and remain vigilant, though officials later announced that the threat to their area had passed.

Investigation Ongoing

The Utah DPS and Wayne County Sheriff's Office continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the three deaths. Authorities are encouraging anyone with relevant information to reach out by emailing siac@utah.gov or by calling the dedicated tip line at 801-965-3838.
