What was supposed to be a routine school excursion to London turned into an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience for approximately 50 young students from St Gregory Primary School in Sudbury, Suffolk. The children came face-to-face with none other than Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson — one of the biggest names in Hollywood — in a surprise encounter that left them completely speechless.
A Trip Unlike Any Other
The Year 3 and Year 4 pupils set off for the capital on Tuesday believing they were heading out on a perfectly ordinary school visit. Instead, they found themselves attending the Moana Experience, an elaborate immersive event staged in support of the highly anticipated live-action remake of Disney's beloved 2016 animated film.
Held at Potters Field Park along the banks of the River Thames, the event was nothing short of magical. Students got to explore a stunning recreation of the Polynesian paradise of Motunui, enjoy themed food and drinks, and marvel at impressive installations — including a full-scale replica of Maui's iconic six-metre hook and a breathtaking reconstruction of Moana's traditional canoe.
The Moment They Met The Rock
The highlight of the day, however, was undeniably their surprise meeting with Dwayne Johnson himself — the man who voices the demigod Maui in the film.
"It was awesome and they were losing their minds, going bonkers and going crazy," Johnson told the BBC with a wide grin. "That's the fun part of fame and the best part of fame. This kind of stuff is important."
For the children, the moment Johnson appeared was almost too surreal to process. One student recalled the experience vividly: "It was the best day ever. All of us were really excited and some of us got high fives from him, and he made sure we all enjoyed the time with him. When he came round the corner we were speechless — like, 'Is that actually Dwayne Johnson?'"
How It All Started: A Viral Social Media Video
The extraordinary day had its roots in a clever idea hatched by the school's headteacher, Daniel Woodrow. Back in January, he encouraged students to record a social media video specifically aimed at grabbing The Rock's attention, with the promise that if the former WWE champion actually watched it, he would take them to see the new Moana film as their end-of-year treat.
The video spread rapidly online, going viral and doing exactly what it set out to do — catching the eye of the 54-year-old star. Johnson responded with a heartfelt four-minute video message, expressing how deeply moved he was by the children's effort.
"I heard you guys were super, super pumped and excited to see live action Moana, so I'm going to find a theatre, rent it out, and you guys are going to see Moana," he told them warmly. He also generously offered to cover the cost of their sweets and snacks for the screening, signing off in true Maui fashion: "Love you guys, keep doing great in school and, as Maui says, 'You're welcome'."
Disney Steps In to Make the Magic Happen
Following the viral moment, Disney partnered with Woodrow to arrange something far grander than a cinema trip. The resulting event brought the students to London for an experience that went far beyond anyone's expectations.
Johnson made time for each and every child — wishing one student a happy birthday, filming a group video with the class, and ensuring no one missed out on a moment with him.
"For the biggest movie star on the planet to spend so much time with the children... that was incredible," Woodrow told the BBC. "He took a video with them, so the children have all been in a movie with Dwayne Johnson now, which is incredible. At the start of the day the children had no idea it was even going to happen, so it makes it even more special."
