Star-Studded Shane MacGowan Tribute Album Set for November Release

A sweeping tribute to the late Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan is on its way, with an extraordinary lineup of musicians, actors, and cultural icons coming together to celebrate his legacy. Titled 20th Century Paddy: The Songs of Shane MacGowan, the album is scheduled for release on November 13 and features contributions from Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Depp, Kate Moss, Tom Waits, and a host of acclaimed Irish and British artists.

Bruce Springsteen Leads the Tributes with Heartfelt Essay and Cover

Bruce Springsteen has already offered fans a taste of what's to come, releasing his cover of A Rainy Night in Soho as the album's first single. Alongside the track, Springsteen penned a moving tribute essay in which he situates MacGowan among the greatest artists of all time — a lineage that includes Woody Guthrie, Little Richard, Miles Davis, Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and John Lydon.

In his essay, Springsteen described these figures as "geniuses… both timeless and the embodiment of their moment in time," and reflected on the unconventional lives many of them led. Of MacGowan specifically, he wrote:

"Shane's voice was so deeply real, profane and honest, his writing so flashing, alive and historically rich its genesis appeared as a mystery to all including, I believe, its creator. The dangerous joy, the glee and courage, the humour in the face of fate… Shane was all naked bottomless humanity. Threatening to force us to ask ourselves if we were living deeply, authentically. His soul was filled with the transgressive and ecstatic properties of the saints. I don't know who'll be listening to my music in 100 years but I know they'll be listening to Shane's."

Springsteen also shared that he had the privilege of spending time with MacGowan shortly before his passing. "He was not well but he and his wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, proved warm and gracious hosts," Springsteen recalled. "As I left, I thanked him for his beautiful work, his music, his songs, his life. I stood in his warmth, kissed him and told him I loved him."

An Impressive and Diverse Roster of Contributors

The album brings together an eclectic mix of talent spanning multiple generations and genres. American artists Tom Waits and Steve Earle feature alongside British indie icons including the Libertines, Primal Scream, and the Jesus and Mary Chain. The Irish music community is also strongly represented, with contributions from Lisa O'Neill, Damien Dempsey, and surviving members of the Pogues themselves.

Notable Duets and Kate Moss's Musical Return

The record also boasts a pair of notable duets. Irish singer-songwriter Hozier teams up with actress and singer Jessie Buckley, while Johnny Depp is paired with Irish artist Imelda May. While the full track listing has yet to be revealed, Kate Moss's involvement marks another chapter in her sporadic musical career — one that has previously seen her collaborate with Primal Scream, Babyshambles, and the Lemonheads, as well as contribute tambourine on various Oasis recordings.

Charitable Focus: Supporting Dublin's Homeless Community

Beyond its artistic ambitions, the album carries a meaningful charitable purpose. Fifty percent of all artist royalties generated by 20th Century Paddy will be donated to the Dublin Simon Community, an organization dedicated to supporting homeless individuals in the Irish capital.

MacGowan's widow, Victoria Mary Clarke, expressed her gratitude in a statement: "Shane's spirit and songwriting are eternally exalted through this glorious collection. Each song is uniquely and graciously interpreted by these beyond-beautiful artists, and his family are humbled by and thankful to each and every one of the musicians involved."

Remembering Shane MacGowan

Born in England to Irish parents, MacGowan carved out a singular place in music history through his work with the Pogues and as a solo artist. His songs ranged from rollicking, pub-fueled anthems to deeply tender ballads, earning him an enduring place in the hearts of music lovers worldwide. The Pogues' beloved Christmas track Fairytale of New York has returned to the UK Top 10 every year since 2017, a testament to his lasting cultural impact.

MacGowan passed away in November 2023 at the age of 65, following a prolonged period of declining health. 20th Century Paddy is the latest in a growing series of posthumous tributes to his life and work.

A Year of Tributes

In March 2024, New York's Carnegie Hall hosted a joint tribute to both MacGowan and Sinéad O'Connor — who also died in 2023 at the age of 56 — featuring performances from David Gray, Dropkick Murphys, and Glen Hansard, all of whom also appear on the new compilation.

The surviving Pogues celebrated the 40th anniversary of their debut album Red Roses for Me with a series of live performances, including a memorable show at London's Hackney Empire featuring guest spots from members of Fontaines DC, Lankum, and Goat Girl. The band has since announced a European greatest hits tour scheduled for November and December, with further special guest appearances expected.
