Six BCP Beaches Receive Prestigious Blue Flag Awards

Anti-litter organisation Keep Britain Tidy has granted coveted Blue Flag status to six beaches across the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council area. However, one well-loved stretch of coastline — Avon Beach — was left off the list this year due to what the council described as an "administrative error."

Which Beaches Made the Cut?

The six beaches recognised with Blue Flag awards this year are:

  • Sandbanks
  • Shore Road
  • Canford Cliffs
  • Durley Chine
  • Fisherman's Walk
  • Highcliffe Beach

Among the highlights, Sandbanks Beach claimed its Blue Flag for an impressive 39th consecutive year — a remarkable milestone that underscores its unbroken record since the programme first launched.

What Is a Blue Flag Award?

A Blue Flag is an internationally recognised mark of excellence, evaluated across four key criteria: water quality, environmental management, safety provisions, and the standard of visitor services. Administered by Keep Britain Tidy in the UK, the award serves as a trusted guide for beachgoers seeking clean, safe, and well-managed coastal destinations.

Avon Beach Misses Out — But Council Remains Confident

Despite the administrative oversight that cost Avon Beach its Blue Flag this year, BCP Council was quick to reassure the public that the beach's quality remains undiminished.

"Those who know and love Avon Beach will already know its appeal and excellence goes far beyond any single accreditation," the council stated.

Officials highlighted the beach's well-maintained promenade, thoughtfully managed facilities, and a lively selection of amenities — including a popular beach sauna and the well-regarded Noisy Lobster restaurant — as enduring reasons for visitors to flock to Christchurch Bay.

Seaside Awards Also Presented

In addition to the Blue Flags, all six beaches also received a Seaside Award. Bournemouth, Boscombe, and Avon Beach were similarly honoured with this recognition, which celebrates beaches that deliver a high-quality, clean, and well-managed environment for visitors.

Council Pledges Continued Coastal Excellence

Richard Herrett, the council's portfolio holder for destination, leisure, and commercial operations, emphasised that the visitor experience remains the ultimate priority.

"While awards are important recognition, what matters most is the quality of the experience on our beaches, which we are committed to maintaining across all locations," he said.

Herrett added that the council would continue collaborating with partners to ensure the region's coastline maintains its reputation as among the finest in the country.

The Blue Flags awarded this year reflect the "consistently high standards delivered throughout the year" by BCP's seafront teams and their partners — a testament to the ongoing dedication behind the scenes at some of England's most popular beaches.
