Sir Anthony Hopkins Brings Hollywood Magic to a Small Welsh Town

The picturesque north Wales town of Dolgellau experienced something truly extraordinary this week when Oscar-winning acting legend Sir Anthony Hopkins arrived to film scenes for his highly anticipated new movie, A Visit To Grandpa's. Hundreds of excited onlookers gathered over three days to catch a glimpse of the iconic star at work.

What Is the Film About?

Based on a short story by the celebrated Welsh writer Dylan Thomas, A Visit To Grandpa's tells the heartwarming tale of a young boy who is sent to spend a summer with his quirky grandfather on a rural Welsh farm. What begins as an ordinary visit soon turns into a series of unexpected and memorable adventures that neither grandfather nor grandson could have anticipated.

The production brings together an impressive ensemble cast. Newport-born actress Aimee-Ffion Edwards, widely recognised for her role in Peaky Blinders, stars as the boy's mother, while Doctor Who actor Aneurin Barnard also features in the film. Director DJ Caruso is at the helm of the project, describing the experience of bringing Dylan Thomas's story to life alongside Sir Anthony as "one of the great honours of my directorial life."

Dolgellau Buzzes With Excitement and Community Pride

The arrival of the film crew turned Dolgellau's familiar streets into a bustling production set, much to the delight of both local residents and visiting tourists. Deputy Mayor Nia Wyn Evans captured the community's enthusiasm perfectly, noting that while the town regularly welcomes visitors, nothing quite compares to watching a professional film crew transform their beloved hometown into what felt like a Hollywood set.

Around 200 people turned out across the three days of filming, and Sir Anthony himself made the experience even more memorable by taking time out to personally interact with the crowd. Evans praised his warmth and approachability, describing him as a grounded, humble man who genuinely appreciated the charm and beauty of the town.

"He made people feel truly special," she said, adding that the community would have been deeply disappointed had he not taken a moment to connect with them. The visit was widely described as a proud and uplifting moment for the entire community.

A Career Defined by Iconic Roles

Sir Anthony Hopkins, who was born in Port Talbot, Wales, is widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation. Now 88 years old, his career spans decades of remarkable performances across stage and screen.

He is perhaps best known internationally for his chilling portrayal of cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in the 1991 psychological horror classic The Silence of the Lambs, a performance that earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor the following year. He reprised the role in the sequel Hannibal in 2001 and its prequel Red Dragon in 2002.

Decades later, Hopkins proved his enduring brilliance by claiming a second Oscar for Best Actor in 2021 for his deeply moving performance in Florian Zeller's acclaimed drama The Father, which also starred Olivia Colman.

No official release date has yet been announced for A Visit To Grandpa's, but anticipation is already building among fans of Welsh cinema, Dylan Thomas enthusiasts, and admirers of Sir Anthony Hopkins worldwide.
