A second US citizen infected with Ebola in the DRC has arrived in Germany for specialized treatment, as the Trump administration moves to restrict commercial travel from the affected region.

Second American Ebola Patient Flown to Germany for Treatment

A US citizen who contracted Ebola while working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been transported to Germany for medical care, Germany's health ministry confirmed on Monday. The development comes just weeks after another American infected with the virus in the DRC underwent successful treatment at a Berlin hospital.

The patient landed at Frankfurt airport overnight and was subsequently transferred to the city's university hospital, where specialists are equipped to handle highly infectious diseases.

Who Is the Patient?

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus identified the man as a humanitarian worker who had been stationed in Bunia, the regional capital of the DRC's northeastern Ituri province. A spokesperson for the Christian aid organization Samaritan's Purse later confirmed to Reuters that the patient — a man in his 60s — was a full-time employee serving as a warehouse manager in the country.

The Ongoing Ebola Outbreak in the DRC

Ituri province sits at the epicenter of the DRC's current Ebola outbreak, which authorities declared in mid-May. This marks the country's 17th recorded Ebola outbreak. Unlike previous strains, this outbreak is driven by the Bundibugyo variant of the virus, for which neither a vaccine nor a proven cure currently exists.

According to WHO data, the outbreak has produced more than 1,900 confirmed cases and claimed over 700 confirmed lives, underscoring the severity of the ongoing public health emergency.

Germany's Role in Treating Ebola Cases

German authorities noted that American officials specifically requested Berlin's assistance due to Germany's established expertise in managing Ebola patients, as well as the relatively shorter flight distance between the DRC and Germany compared to the United States.

The health ministry moved to reassure the public, stating that the patient poses "no danger to the general population or to other patients" at the Frankfurt hospital. Officials added that the risk of an Ebola-infected individual entering Germany remains "very low."

This is not the first time Germany has stepped in to treat an American Ebola patient. In late May, another US national was admitted to Berlin's renowned Charité hospital along with his family and was successfully discharged after approximately two weeks of intensive treatment.

Trump Administration Restricts Commercial Travel from the DRC

In a parallel development, the Trump administration announced on Monday that it is preventing American citizens currently in the DRC from boarding commercial flights bound for the United States. The restriction is being enforced under Title 49, a federal transportation authority, according to a White House official cited by Reuters.

Under the new policy, US citizens in the DRC — or those who have recently departed the country — will be placed on a "do-not-board" list. They will remain on that list until they have spent a minimum of 21 days in a third country, effectively serving as a quarantine buffer before returning home.

Reports indicate that approximately two dozen Americans were preparing to board US-bound flights on Tuesday following travel to the DRC. The US State Department has indicated it will provide support to affected citizens during the mandatory waiting period.
