Paul Chuckle Steps onto the National Theatre Stage

Iconic children's entertainer Paul Chuckle is preparing for an exciting new chapter in his career, with the announcement that he will make his National Theatre debut in an upcoming production of Jim Cartwright's classic play, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.

The 78-year-old performer, whose real name is Paul Elliott and who hails from Rotherham, will take on the role of the boisterous Mr Boo. Expressing his enthusiasm for the opportunity, Chuckle said he is absolutely "delighted" to be joining the production, adding: "I can't wait to get into rehearsals with Robert Hastie and this fantastic team. To perform at the National Theatre and then head out on tour across England is a dream come true."

A Star-Studded Cast

Chuckle will share the stage with a talented ensemble of performers. Silent Witness actress Francesca Mills will take on the coveted title role, while Waterloo Road favourite Jill Halfpenny is set to portray the larger-than-life character of Mari Hoff.

Mills, who previously collaborated with director Robert Hastie on a production of Hamlet at the National Theatre, expressed her delight at reuniting with the director. "My first show I ever did at the National was in the Dorfman Theatre, so to be returning to that beautiful space over Christmas followed by a tour around England — I'm truly over the moon," she said.

Halfpenny was equally enthusiastic, describing her excitement at the prospect of playing Mari Hoff in what she called a "beloved Northern play." She added: "I have long admired Jim's work and to get the opportunity to play this role at the National Theatre and at theatres across England this winter is very special."

Tour Dates and Venues

Directed by Robert Hastie, the production will open at the National Theatre in London on 2 December, running through to 23 January. Following its London run, the show will embark on a national tour, with performances scheduled in cities including Newcastle, Sheffield, and Salford.

About the Production

Described as a "joyful, tender and bittersweet celebration of music, ambition and the courage it takes to be heard," the production promises to be a moving and uplifting theatrical experience. The show will feature timeless musical numbers associated with legendary artists such as Judy Garland and Dame Shirley Bassey, adding an extra layer of glamour and nostalgia to the performance.
