Patrick Muldoon, Beloved Actor and Producer, Dies at 57
Patrick Muldoon, the acclaimed American actor and producer best remembered for his iconic performances in the long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives and Paul Verhoeven's sci-fi blockbuster Starship Troopers, has passed away at the age of 57. His manager confirmed to Deadline that Muldoon died at home on Sunday as a result of a heart attack.
A Career Defined by Memorable Roles
Muldoon first captured audiences' hearts when he stepped into the role of Austin Reed on NBC's beloved daytime drama Days of Our Lives, where he appeared from 1992 to 1995. His character — a boxer drawn into a compelling romance with Carrie Brady, played by Christie Clark — quickly became a fan favorite. He made a brief but welcomed return to the show in 2011.
His transition to the big screen proved equally impressive. In 1997, Muldoon joined the cast of Starship Troopers, the celebrated sci-fi action film directed by Paul Verhoeven. He portrayed Zander Barcalow, the charismatic romantic rival to the film's central hero, played by Casper Van Dien — a role that cemented his place in pop culture history.
Between his soap opera success and his Hollywood breakthrough, Muldoon also took on the role of villain Richard Hart in the hit primetime drama Melrose Place, appearing across three seasons from 1995 to 1996. Earlier in his career, he had a recurring role as Jeffrey Hunter on the popular high school sitcom Saved By the Bell.
From USC Student to Hollywood Star
Born and raised in San Pedro, California, Muldoon discovered his passion for performance while studying at the University of Southern California, where he was also a member of the Trojans football team. Following his graduation in 1991, he wasted no time making his mark in the entertainment industry.
Tributes Pour In from Co-Stars and Colleagues
News of Muldoon's passing prompted an outpouring of grief from those who knew and worked alongside him.
Alison Sweeney, his former Days of Our Lives co-star, shared a heartfelt tribute on X, writing: "This is such heartbreaking news. Pat was a rare kind of person — brilliantly talented, endlessly kind and generous in spirit." She went on to describe how his warmth helped ease her nerves when she first joined the show, adding: "He brought his unique charm and humour to work every day. A truly gifted guy, and one who will be profoundly missed."
Dina Meyer, who appeared alongside Muldoon in Starship Troopers, expressed her devastation, stating: "I can't believe he's gone. Pat was one of the kindest people I've ever known and was like a brother to me. He was such a light... always making us laugh." She extended her sincere condolences to his family and all who loved him.
A Multifaceted Talent Behind the Camera
Beyond his on-screen work, Muldoon was equally passionate about storytelling from behind the lens. As a producer, he contributed to films including The Tribes of Palos Verdes, Arkansas, and Marlowe. He was also set to produce the upcoming feature Kockroach, which stars Chris Hemsworth.
In addition to his film and television pursuits, Muldoon was a dedicated musician and fronted a band called The Sleeping Masses.
Final Projects and Lasting Legacy
Muldoon's final on-screen appearance will be in the forthcoming action-crime thriller Dirty Hands, in which he starred opposite Starship Troopers alumna Denise Richards — a fitting final chapter to a career built on memorable collaborations.
He is survived by his partner, Miriam Rothbart; his parents, Deanna and Patrick Muldoon Sr.; his sister and brother-in-law, Shana and Ahmet Zappa; and his niece Halo and nephew Arrow Zappa.
Patrick Muldoon leaves behind a rich legacy — not only through his work on screen and behind the camera, but through the countless lives he touched with his warmth, generosity, and unmistakable spirit.
