The world-renowned Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City has been identified as one of 31 Manhattan buildings that recently tested positive for the bacteria responsible for causing Legionnaires' disease. The discovery came as city health officials scrambled to contain a fresh outbreak on the Upper East Side.

Health Department Orders Buildings to Act

New York City's Department of Health released a comprehensive list of 31 Upper East Side buildings, all of which received orders to thoroughly clean and disinfect their cooling towers in response to the growing cluster of cases. The Guggenheim — recognized globally for its distinctive cylindrical architecture — was among 19 buildings that had already completed the required remediation process by the time the list was made public. The remaining structures were directed to finalize their cleanup efforts by the following day.

City officials were careful to clarify that a positive test result does not automatically identify any building as the definitive source of the outbreak. The testing methods used are unable to differentiate between live and dead bacteria, meaning a positive reading alone is not conclusive evidence of active contamination.

No Shutdown, No Ongoing Risk

Despite the positive test, the Guggenheim Museum remained open throughout the remediation process and was never forced to close its doors. Museum representatives issued a public statement confirming that all necessary steps had been taken.

"The city has confirmed that there is no additional action needed at this time, and this poses no risk to anyone inside the building," the museum stated, adding that it employs an external contractor to perform routine monthly testing and treatment of its cooling tower.

Designed by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Guggenheim holds designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is widely regarded as one of the most architecturally significant buildings of the 20th century.

Outbreak Numbers and Community Impact

As of the latest figures from the city health department, more than 50 individuals have been diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease linked to the Upper East Side cluster. Fewer than 20 patients remained hospitalized, and no fatalities had been reported in connection with this particular outbreak.

The situation draws uncomfortable comparisons to a severe outbreak that struck the Harlem neighborhood of upper Manhattan the previous year, in which seven people lost their lives and over 100 were sickened. That outbreak was eventually traced to cooling towers atop Harlem Hospital and a nearby construction site housing the city's public health laboratory.

How the Bacteria Spreads

Legionella bacteria thrive in warm water environments and commonly spread through building water systems, including showerheads, hot tubs, and cooling towers. Cooling towers, typically installed on rooftops to regulate temperatures in refrigeration and climate-control systems, can harbor and disperse the bacteria — though they do not contaminate a building's drinking water, indoor air, or standard air conditioning systems.

Critically, Legionnaires' disease is not contagious between people. Infection typically occurs when an individual inhales microscopic droplets of water that carry the bacteria.

Symptoms and Risk Factors

Symptoms of Legionnaires' disease generally emerge between two days and two weeks following exposure. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these symptoms include:

  • Persistent cough
  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches
  • Shortness of breath

Certain groups face a heightened risk of contracting the illness, including individuals aged 50 and older, those who smoke or vape, people living with chronic lung conditions, and anyone with a compromised immune system.

A Disease With a Notable History

Legionnaires' disease first earned its name following a devastating outbreak at an American Legion convention held in Philadelphia in 1976, an event that marked the initial identification of the illness and led to decades of research into its prevention and treatment.
