Each image combines Chandra's X-ray data with observations from other powerful telescopes, showcasing some of the universe's most extraordinary phenomena, from the remnants of a stellar explosion to a galaxy cluster holding clues about the mysterious nature of dark matter.

Cassiopeia A: The Remnants of a Stellar Explosion

The first image spotlights Cassiopeia A, one of the most well-studied supernova remnants in the Milky Way. This composite brings together X-ray data from Chandra — displayed in blue and purple — with infrared imagery from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, shown in red and white.

Chandra's contribution highlights the powerful shockwave generated by the original stellar explosion and reveals scattered elements within the debris field, including iron, calcium, and oxygen. Webb's infrared perspective captures the outward-expanding shell of material and the surrounding clouds of cosmic dust.

NGC 3603: A Stellar Nursery Bursting With Young Stars

The second image showcases NGC 3603, a vibrant nebula within the Milky Way that hosts a dense cluster of newly formed stars. Chandra's X-ray data — rendered in red and white — exposes diffuse emission near the nebula's core along with numerous distinct X-ray point sources scattered throughout.

Layered on top, observations from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope across optical, infrared, and ultraviolet wavelengths add rich detail: tightly packed stars at the center and sweeping clouds of dust and gas along the lower regions. The result is a vivid tableau dominated by the patriotic color scheme while vividly illustrating the process of star birth.

NGC 4736: A Spiral Galaxy With an Active Star-Forming Core

Also known as Messier 94, the spiral galaxy NGC 4736 takes center stage in the third image. Chandra's multi-energy X-ray observations — shown in red, orange, and blue — are layered with ground-based visible light photography contributed by astrophotographers.

At the galaxy's center lies a prominent starburst ring, a circular region where new stars are forming at a remarkable rate. Researchers believe this intense activity is driven by gas being funneled inward through the galaxy's distinctive oval-shaped structure, continuously feeding the star formation process.

ZwCl 0024+1652: A Galaxy Cluster That Unlocks Dark Matter Secrets

The final image in the collection features ZwCl 0024+1652, a distant galaxy cluster that has become a key landmark in dark matter research. Enhanced Hubble observations rendered in blue reveal spatial evidence for dark matter's presence, while a separate Hubble view captures the cluster's individual galaxies in yellow and white.

Chandra contributes a glowing red cloud representing superheated gas that permeates the entire cluster. Remarkably, this vast reservoir of hot gas contains significantly more mass than all of the cluster's galaxies combined — a finding that continues to challenge and deepen our understanding of the universe's hidden structure.
