Michael Jackson Tops UK Album Chart, Edging Out Kneecap in Thrilling Three-Way Race
The King of Pop reclaims the UK album number one spot, narrowly defeating Irish rap trio Kneecap and former Spice Girl Melanie C in a dramatic chart battle.
Michael Jackson Claims UK Album Number One Ahead of Kneecap and Melanie C
The late King of Pop, Michael Jackson, has secured the top position on the official UK album chart, narrowly defeating Irish language rap group Kneecap and former Spice Girl Melanie C in a compelling three-way showdown.
Kneecap Falls Just Short of Historic Victory
Belfast-based trio Kneecap — comprised of members Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí — finished in second place with their latest release, Fenian, which dropped earlier this month. The album represents the group's highest-ever chart position in the UK, a significant leap from their 2024 release Fine Art, which peaked at number 43 in the UK and number two in the Republic of Ireland.
Midweek data from the Official Charts Company had revealed that fewer than 3,000 units separated Jackson from Kneecap at the summit, setting the stage for one of the most closely contested chart finishes in recent memory. Following the release of that midweek data, Kneecap took to social media to suggest that Fenian could potentially become the first-ever Irish language album to reach number one in the UK — a claim that BBC News NI put to the Official Charts Company, which had yet to verify it at the time of publication.
Melanie C Achieves Career-Best Solo Chart Position
Rounding out the top three was former Spice Girl Melanie C, whose ninth studio album, Sweat, delivered her best-ever solo chart performance. Despite a long and celebrated career, Melanie C has never achieved a solo UK number one album. Her previous career high came with her 1999 debut solo record, Northern Star. Notably, none of the former Spice Girls have yet managed to top the UK album chart as solo artists.
Michael Jackson's Chart Legacy Lives On
Michael Jackson was no newcomer to the top of the UK charts. During his lifetime, he claimed the number one spot on nine separate occasions, and even after his passing in 2009, The Essential Michael Jackson spent seven weeks at the summit. His latest chart triumph has been widely attributed to renewed public interest sparked by the biographical film Michael, in which his nephew Jaafar Jackson portrays the iconic singer. The film shattered box office records, achieving the highest-ever opening weekend for a music biopic with a staggering global haul of $217 million (approximately £160 million).
The official UK number one album was announced at 17:45 BST on Friday, cementing Jackson's enduring legacy and reminding audiences worldwide of his unparalleled cultural impact.
