The contribution, generous enough to fund approximately 9,000 meals, arrived through the band's charitable foundation, All Within My Hands, and has been hailed as the charity's single largest celebrity donation to date.

Just two weeks before Metallica's Cardiff gig, the foodbank had taken to social media to raise the alarm, expressing deep concern over warehouse stock levels that had reached unprecedented lows. Cardiff Foodbank CEO Rachel Biggs recalled the moment the news came through. "We had an email saying 'This isn't a scam, please get in touch with the foundation,'" she explained. "They said they were going to donate £20,000 to us." She described the contribution as transformative, saying it would allow the charity to place a significant bulk food order and restore depleted stock levels.

Cardiff Foodbank serves around 20,000 people annually across eight city centres, supported by a mobile service that delivers pre-packaged food bags directly to those who need them. Alarmingly, one in every three individuals the charity assisted last year was a child.

Biggs highlighted the growing strain on the organisation, noting that while demand has remained consistent with previous years, food donations have fallen by 27%. The charity estimates its total running costs for the year will reach £700,000, making external donations essential to keeping operations afloat.

"The cost of living affects all of us — including our donors," said Biggs. "We know people are generous, but we also know their budgets are being squeezed. When this money lands in our account, we'll finally be able to replenish our stock and face the rest of the year with confidence."

All Within My Hands: Metallica's Charitable Legacy

Founded in 2017, Metallica's All Within My Hands foundation was established with the specific goal of channelling a portion of ticket sales from every tour stop toward local and national charitable causes. Foodbanks across the globe have been among the primary beneficiaries of the foundation's work, making Cardiff's donation part of a much broader, ongoing effort.

Alongside the financial contribution, Metallica also partnered with the Welsh Blood Service ahead of the Cardiff show, encouraging fans to donate blood and plasma. Dedicated donation sessions ran across Wales throughout the week leading up to the June 28 concert and continued through July 3.

Celebrity Generosity Putting Cardiff Foodbank in the Spotlight

Metallica are not the first major musical act to support Cardiff Foodbank in recent times. Pop superstar Taylor Swift made her own donation to the charity following her Principality Stadium performances in 2024 as part of her globally celebrated Eras Tour — a contribution so substantial it was said to have funded the equivalent of one and a half articulated lorries packed with food.

Biggs noted that high-profile donations do more than simply fill shelves. "What's great for us is that it helps raise awareness," she said. "Metallica are mobilising their fans and the local community. That kind of visibility matters enormously."

The donation resonated deeply with those on the ground. Eddie Cawston, a dedicated foodbank volunteer and committed Metallica fan who attended Sunday's concert, expressed his admiration for the gesture. "They'll earn a phenomenal amount from this tour, and they're still giving back at every stop along the way. It's brilliant."
