Matthew Rhys Credits Welsh Heritage for Landing Lead Role in Apple TV's Widow's Bay
Emmy-winner Matthew Rhys says his Welsh roots gave him the edge in securing the lead role in Apple TV's new horror-comedy series Widow's Bay.
Matthew Rhys Brings Welsh Spirit to Apple TV's Widow's Bay
Emmy Award-winning actor Matthew Rhys has revealed that his deep Welsh heritage and personal ties to a Pembrokeshire coastal town played a significant role in helping him land the lead in Apple TV's upcoming horror-comedy series, Widow's Bay.
In the show, Rhys takes on the role of Tom Loftis, the mayor of a charming but troubled New England island community — a town plagued by poor connectivity, unreliable mobile signals, and locals who are convinced their home is under a supernatural curse.
A Role Rooted in Welsh Mythology
During his audition process, Rhys leaned into his background, drawing on Wales's extraordinarily rich tradition of folklore and myth to make his case for the role.
"If myth and legend were an Olympic sport, our country would podium every time, because it's something very dear to our hearts," Rhys told BBC Radio Wales.
Though the fictional town in Widow's Bay is set in New England, Rhys cheekily acknowledged a familiar inspiration closer to home. "It's not Fishguard, but it's heavily based on it," he joked — referring to the Pembrokeshire port town where his mother's family originates. Born in Cardiff, Rhys also noted that he comes from "a long line of mariners," a heritage that no doubt informed his connection to the coastal setting.
What to Expect from Widow's Bay
The series follows Mayor Tom Loftis as he attempts to revive tourism in his struggling community, all while desperately trying to suppress unsettling reports of paranormal activity. What begins as damage control soon takes a darker turn when age-old legends that once seemed "too ludicrous to be true" begin to manifest in very real and alarming ways.
Rhys serves not only as the lead actor but also as executive producer on the project, underscoring his deep personal investment in bringing this darkly comic story to life.
A Career Defined by Acclaimed Roles
Widow's Bay arrives as the latest milestone in an already impressive career for Rhys. He gained widespread recognition during his five-season run on the drama Brothers and Sisters, before earning an Emmy for his portrayal of a Soviet spy living undercover in The Americans — a role that also introduced him to his real-life partner, Keri Russell. More recently, he starred alongside Claire Danes in the Netflix thriller The Beast in Me.
From Near-Army Recruit to Broadway Hopeful
Despite his success, Rhys has never taken his career for granted. He openly recalled a humbling period following his 2000 stage appearance opposite Kathleen Turner in The Graduate, when he went without acting work for over eighteen months and seriously considered enlisting in the British Army.
"I met with an officer and he was incredibly suspicious of me as an actor," Rhys recounted with characteristic humor. "About a week later, I got a rejection letter from the British Army saying, 'thank you for your interest, good luck in your career.' And I went, 'oh my god, I can't even join the army.'"
The anecdote speaks volumes about the unpredictable nature of life as a professional actor — a reality Rhys remains acutely conscious of to this day.
Playing Burton and a Possible Broadway Debut
Last year, Rhys returned to the stage after a sixteen-year absence with Playing Burton, a critically praised one-man theatrical production in which he portrayed his personal hero, the legendary Welsh actor Richard Burton. The tour raised vital funds for the Welsh National Theatre, a cultural initiative founded by actor and philanthropist Michael Sheen to champion stories from Wales.
Now, Rhys is in early discussions about bringing Playing Burton to Broadway — a prospect that clearly holds enormous meaning for him.
"I hadn't been on stage in 16 years, so terrifying as it was, it was one of the most gratifying things I've ever done within acting," he reflected. "As memories go, it will be forever one of the most cherished I have."
