Jill Biden Reveals Doctors Examined President Immediately After Debate, Feared He Had a Stroke
Jill Biden's new memoir reveals doctors checked on the former president moments after his troubled debate performance, contradicting earlier White House statements.
Jill Biden Opens Up About the Night That Changed Everything
New details have emerged about the chaotic moments following former President Joe Biden's widely criticized debate performance against President Donald Trump in June 2024 — and they paint a picture quite different from what the White House originally disclosed.
In her newly released memoir, View from the East Wing, former First Lady Jill Biden reveals that medical personnel examined her husband almost immediately after the debate concluded — not several days later, as the Biden administration had previously stated.
What Really Happened Backstage
Speaking candidly with NPR's All Things Considered host Scott Detrow on the Newsmakers video podcast, Jill Biden described the tense moments that unfolded once the cameras stopped rolling.
"We got off the stage," she explained. "I went to get my stuff. He went with his group, and then we met up in the car, and then the doctors, you know, checked him out and said, 'Oh, he's fine.'"
This account directly contradicts earlier statements from the Biden administration, which maintained that physicians only evaluated the president in the days following the debate — not in the immediate aftermath.
Perhaps most strikingly, Jill Biden admitted that during those anxious moments, she feared her husband may have suffered a stroke. She described the performance as "inexplicable" and acknowledged that even she had no clear explanation for what occurred.
"When people say to me, 'What happened in that moment?' … I don't know," she told Detrow. "I mean, I don't know what happened."
A Performance She Had Never Seen Before
The former first lady was firm in her assertion that the troubled debate showing was an isolated incident. She pushed back against reporting from Axios and other outlets, which cited former aides who claimed Biden's decline had been visible on multiple prior occasions.
"No one came to me and said that," Biden stated.
She also insisted that she had never witnessed her husband in a similar condition before or after that night — a claim that stands in contrast to accounts from several former staffers.
Biden's Decision to Stay in the Race — and Then Step Aside
The debate ultimately proved to be a turning point. Shortly after the disastrous night, President Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race, clearing the path for former Vice President Kamala Harris to assume the Democratic nomination. Harris went on to lose the general election to President Trump.
In her own memoir, 107 Days, Harris offered a critical assessment of the Biden camp, alleging that the Bidens had questioned her loyalty and mishandled key aspects of the 2024 campaign.
Jill Biden also shed light on her husband's evolving thinking about his political future. She confirmed that he had initially intended to serve only a single term before pressure from allies and encouraging midterm results persuaded him to reconsider.
"Originally, he thought, you know, just like you're saying, 'I'm going to do four years and get out,'" she recalled. "But then… Everybody kept saying, 'You've got to… The midterms were good. We've got to keep going.' … And so that's why he made the decision to keep running."
Regret and Reflection
When asked whether she would have approached things differently, Jill Biden expressed deep regret — not about policy or politics, but about the personal toll the experience took on her family.
"So to look back, I wouldn't want anybody to go through that," she said. "No, I never want to go through that again."
