Jasmine Crockett Accuses Republicans of Deliberately Targeting Dallas County to Undermine Her Primary Race
Texas Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is alleging GOP interference in her Democratic primary after the Texas Supreme Court blocked extended voting hours in Dallas County.
Crockett Alleges Republican Interference in Texas Democratic Primary
Texas Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is publicly accusing Republicans of attempting to sabotage her primary election race against moderate Texas State Representative James Talarico, following a contentious legal battle that unfolded on primary night.
The controversy erupted after the Texas Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling overturning a lower court's decision that had granted Dallas County voters additional time — until 9:00 p.m. — to cast their ballots. The high court's ruling mandated that any votes submitted after the original 7:00 p.m. closing time be set aside and not counted.
Separate Primaries Sparked Widespread Voter Confusion
At the heart of the dispute was a decision by several Texas counties, including Dallas, to conduct Republican and Democratic primaries at entirely separate polling locations rather than sharing facilities and equipment. Under Texas state law, party officials retain the right to object to holding joint primaries, and several counties exercised that option for this election cycle.
Counties such as Houston chose to separate their primaries primarily to guard against crossover voting — a concern that shared polling locations could potentially allow voters to interfere with the opposing party's election results. It is worth noting that Texas operates an open primary system, meaning residents are not required to be registered with a party in order to participate in a primary election.
However, the shift to separate polling locations created significant confusion among voters, particularly in Dallas County, which Crockett and other Democrats argued resulted in widespread voter disenfranchisement.
Crockett Speaks Out at Campaign Event
Addressing supporters gathered at her campaign event on Tuesday evening, Crockett was direct in her assessment of what had taken place.
"Knowing that Dallas County is a big dump of votes, we, in my opinion, will not know the election results overall tonight," she told the crowd. "Unfortunately, this is what Republicans like to do. And so, they specifically targeted Dallas County, and I think we all know why."
Crockett further stated that voters had already been harmed by the evening's events. "I can tell you now that people have been disenfranchised," she said, adding that she did not expect final election results to be available that night given the ongoing legal confusion surrounding Dallas County ballots.
Texas Supreme Court Overrules Lower Court Decision
The legal back-and-forth added another layer of uncertainty to an already chaotic primary night. A lower court judge had initially ruled in favor of keeping Dallas County polling locations open past the standard closing time to accommodate voters caught off guard by the location changes. The Texas Supreme Court, however, stepped in with an emergency order reversing that decision, directing election officials to separate out any ballots cast after 7:00 p.m.
For Crockett, the high court's intervention was not a neutral legal ruling — it was, in her view, a politically motivated action designed to suppress Democratic turnout in one of Texas's most heavily Democratic counties.
"They specifically targeted Dallas County, and I think we all know why," she repeated, making clear her belief that the polling disruptions were anything but accidental.
