How to Spot a Fake Vape Before It Causes Serious Harm

Imagine picking up a vape from your local shop, nothing appearing out of the ordinary, only to discover days later that the device is growing dangerously hot with every use. This isn't a rare scenario. It's the reality for countless consumers who unknowingly purchase counterfeit vaping devices sold illegally across the United Kingdom.

These fake vapes often skip basic safety components, such as overheating protection circuits, to cut manufacturing costs by just a few pence. The consequence? A device that could potentially catch fire in your hand or pocket.

The Scale of the Problem

The figures are alarming. Over the past three years, local councils have seized approximately five million illegal vaping devices, with their combined street value estimated at around £39 million, according to data gathered by the legitimate vape industry.

Seizures have been made not only in retail shops but also at major transport hubs, including Luton Airport and the Port of Dover. Many of the confiscated products contained banned substances, dangerously elevated nicotine concentrations, or oversized liquid tanks that exceed legal limits.

John Dunne, Director General of the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA), warns that counterfeit vapes pose genuine health risks. Unlike legitimate products, they bypass rigorous safety testing.

"These companies may not have the same safety features built into the device, because the copycats tend to make the product as cheap as possible," Dunne explains. "The packaging might look similar and the product itself may look similar, but the risks underneath are very real."

Key Warning Signs on the Packaging

The packaging itself is your first and most reliable line of defence. Knowing what to look for can help you avoid a potentially dangerous purchase.

Missing UK Distributor Information

Every legally sold vape in the UK must display a registered UK distributor's address on its packaging. If this information is absent, Dunne is unequivocal: "That's definitely dodgy." This is a non-negotiable legal requirement, and its absence is an immediate red flag.

Poor Print and Packaging Quality

Counterfeit products often reveal themselves through substandard presentation. Watch out for blurry or low-resolution images, flimsy cardboard, or labels that appear hastily printed. Legitimate brands invest in quality packaging that reflects their compliance standards.

No Nicotine Warnings or Ingredient List

Legal vaping products sold in the UK must clearly display nicotine warnings and a complete list of ingredients. If either of these elements is missing or incomplete, treat the product with serious suspicion.

Foreign Language Labelling

All labelling on UK-market vapes must be written in English. If the device name, instructions, or any other text appears in another language, this strongly suggests the product has not been approved for UK sale.

Duplicate Serial Numbers

In one recent police operation, investigators discovered that serial numbers across multiple boxes were identical. Each legitimate product should carry a unique serial number. Matching numbers across different units is a clear indicator of counterfeiting.

What to Do If You're Unsure

If you come across a brand you don't recognise, you can verify whether it has been properly registered with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) via their official website. This quick check could save you from purchasing an unsafe product.

Should you suspect a retailer is stocking illegal vapes, you can report them directly through the UKVIA's reporting platform.

Already Bought a Fake? Here's What to Do

If you believe you've accidentally purchased a counterfeit vaping device, stop using it immediately. Photograph the product and its packaging, noting where and when you bought it, and submit a report to your local Trading Standards office. Your report could help prevent others from falling into the same trap.

Staying informed and vigilant remains the most effective way to protect yourself from the growing flood of illegal vapes entering the market.
