Wind turbines have long been celebrated as symbols of clean, sustainable power. But when these towering structures reach the end of their operational lives, they leave behind a surprisingly difficult environmental problem — blades that cannot be recycled and have traditionally ended up in landfill or incineration.

As wind farms across Ireland approach decommissioning age, the industry is being forced to confront an uncomfortable question: how do you retire a green energy asset without undoing its environmental legacy?

A Growing Waste Crisis on the Horizon

The scale of the challenge is significant. Thousands of tonnes of turbine blade material are expected to require disposal before 2030, and in Northern Ireland alone, more than 400 turbines are projected to need replacement over the next 15 years.

The first commercial wind farm ever established on the island of Ireland — Bellacorrick in County Mayo — was decommissioned at the beginning of this year, marking a symbolic turning point for the industry.

Globally, the problem is even more staggering. Approximately 125,000 tonnes of turbine blades are currently being disposed of annually, with very few ending up in genuinely sustainable solutions.

Northern Ireland Companies Lead the Charge

Two Northern Ireland-based businesses are now collaborating to ensure that the blades from sites like Bellacorrick find a far more responsible final destination.

Turning Blades Into Reusable Materials

Lurgan-based Plaswire Ltd, based in County Armagh, has developed a process that converts decommissioned turbine blades into a durable, long-lasting material that can serve as a direct substitute for timber and precast concrete. Practical applications include fence posts and reusable transport pallets — everyday products with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

Chief Executive Andrew Billingsley described the environmental stakes involved in finding better disposal routes.

"The blades are big — they have been going to landfill and disappearing into quarries," he explained. "At present, around 125,000 tonnes of blades across the world are being disposed of annually, and very rarely is it done in a sustainable way."

The carbon savings are measurable and meaningful. Producing a tonne of virgin plastic generates approximately three tonnes of CO2. Incinerating plastics releases between 2.7 and 2.9 tonnes of CO2 per tonne burned. By diverting blade material into reusable products, Plaswire aims to prevent significant greenhouse gas emissions from entering the atmosphere.

Research from Queen's University Belfast has further validated the potential of repurposed blade material, demonstrating that it can be safely used in the construction of bridges and other street infrastructure.

Technology That Tells the Full Story

Proving the green credentials of recycled products requires more than good intentions — it demands transparency throughout the entire supply chain. That is where the second company, ubloquity, enters the picture.

Founded by Kieran Kelly, ubloquity attaches QR codes or radio frequency identification (RFID) technology directly to recycled products. This allows the item to be tracked from its point of origin all the way through to the end user, providing a complete and verifiable account of its journey.

"Hold your phone close to the product and it will transmit its entire story," Kelly explained. "When it was made, who made it, what production line it came off, where it originated, and what it has become in its final form."

This kind of digital traceability is already in use for post-Brexit freight checks crossing the Irish Sea, demonstrating its reliability in high-stakes commercial environments.

Why Traceability Matters in the Circular Economy

As global regulations around sustainability and supply chain transparency continue to tighten, demand for technology-driven accountability is rising sharply. Businesses and brands are increasingly expected to prove — not just claim — their environmental credentials.

Kelly believes the combination of material innovation and digital traceability represents a transformational opportunity, not only for the wind energy sector but for Northern Ireland's broader economic ambitions.

"Being able to use technology to transform a very static product from source all the way through to the end user is completely transformational," he said. "It's a first of its kind for the sector and for Northern Ireland."

A Blueprint for the Future of Decommissioning

The collaboration between Plaswire and ubloquity offers a compelling model for how the wind energy industry can address its end-of-life challenge responsibly. Rather than treating decommissioned blades as an inconvenient liability, forward-thinking companies are beginning to see them as a raw material with genuine commercial and environmental value.

With hundreds of turbines across Northern Ireland set to be retired in the coming years, scaling these solutions quickly will be essential — both for the planet and for the communities that host wind energy infrastructure.
