
Freud Was Right All Along: How Modern Neuroscience Is Catching Up to a 130-Year-Old Theory

Sigmund Freud has long been dismissed by many in the scientific community, but a compelling new study suggests that may have been a mistake. Published in the neurocognitive journal Entropy, the paper draws striking parallels between today's most influential theory of brain function and psychoanalytic ideas that have existed for well over a century. According to the researchers, merging these two fields of thought could unlock a far more complete picture of how the human mind actually works.
The Brain as a Prediction Machine
At the heart of this discussion is what scientists call the predictive processing model — one of the most widely accepted frameworks in contemporary neuroscience. According to this theory, the brain does not simply react to the world around it. Instead, it constantly generates internal predictions about what is likely to happen next, then compares those predictions against incoming sensory data and adjusts accordingly.
This continuous loop of anticipation and correction is believed to underpin how we perceive reality, regulate our emotions, and guide our behavior. What makes the new research particularly interesting is the argument that psychoanalysis has been exploring the very same processes — just from a different angle — for decades.
Researchers Erik Stänicke, Bendik Hovet, Line Indrevoll Stänicke, and their colleagues from the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo contend that Freudian and post-Freudian theory anticipated many of the mechanisms neuroscience is only now beginning to map at a biological level.
"For over 130 years, psychoanalysis has developed psychological theories about how predictions take place at a subjective level, which cognitive neuropsychology is now studying at a physiological level."
Projection, Expectations, and the Stories We Tell Ourselves
One of the clearest points of overlap the researchers identify is the psychoanalytic concept of projection — the tendency to attribute our own feelings, intentions, or expectations onto other people and external situations.
From a neuroscientific perspective, this maps neatly onto how the brain's established expectations shape our perception of the world. According to lead researcher Stänicke, our history of past relationships and experiences subtly conditions what we anticipate from future encounters.
"When we attribute qualities, intentions, or feelings to other people, our brain shapes our experience of the world in line with established expectations," he explains.
The researchers draw a direct parallel here to neuroscience's distinction between perceptual inference — updating your own internal model based on new information — and active inference — attempting to shape the external world so that it aligns with your existing predictions. Psychoanalysis, they argue, has long recognized both of these tendencies in human psychological behavior.
The Mind's Drive Toward Stability
Another major theme connecting both disciplines is the pursuit of psychological stability, or homeostasis. The predictive brain model holds that the mind is fundamentally oriented toward reducing uncertainty, relying on familiar patterns and pre-existing expectations to make the world feel more manageable and predictable.
Psychoanalysis describes something remarkably similar — a mental tendency to recreate familiar relational dynamics, even when those dynamics are unhealthy or counterproductive.
"Psychoanalysts refer to the tendency in the mind to recreate familiar relational patterns, even when these are poorly adapted," says Stänicke.
This insight carries significant implications for understanding mental health conditions. The researchers propose that persistent and rigid psychological symptoms — such as paranoid thinking or an entrenched inner critical voice — may represent stable but inflexible prediction models that the mind clings to because they reduce uncertainty, even at the cost of distorting reality.
"For example, there may be people who automatically expect criticism, rejection, or hostility from others, and therefore interpret situations through this filter despite the fact that reality does not warrant it," Stänicke notes.
Why Lasting Psychological Change Takes Time
Both neuroscience and psychoanalysis offer a compelling explanation for why meaningful mental change is so difficult and slow. These deeply embedded prediction patterns are not stored purely as conscious beliefs — they are wired into procedural memory, expressed through ingrained habits of relating to others rather than through explicit thought.
This is why talk therapy alone is sometimes insufficient. According to the researchers, true psychological change often requires relational experience — new ways of connecting and interacting that can gradually rewire these entrenched patterns over time.
"Psychotherapy sometimes has to work relationally. New experiences in the relationship between therapist and patient can gradually help to change entrenched relational patterns," explains Stänicke.
A More Complete Science of the Mind
The researchers ultimately argue that neuroscience and psychoanalysis are not rival frameworks — they are complementary lenses that, when used together, offer a richer and more nuanced understanding of human psychology.
Predictive neuroscience can provide the biological scaffolding that psychoanalytic ideas have long lacked, while psychoanalysis can offer neuroscience a deeper account of how predictions are actually lived, felt, and expressed in everyday relationships.
"Bringing these two fields together can open up a more holistic psychology, in which both neurological mechanisms and subjective experience are included. In this way, we can understand subjectivity in a more scientific manner," the team concludes.
Far from being a relic of a pre-scientific age, Freud's core intuitions about the mind may be finding new life — and new credibility — in the most cutting-edge corners of modern brain science.
