France Counts the Cost of Record-Breaking Heatwave

France has officially confirmed more than 2,000 excess deaths during the final week of June, a period that marked the peak of a historic and record-breaking heatwave that swept across Europe. According to Public Health France, the number of fatalities recorded between June 22 and June 28 surged by 2,025 — representing a staggering 29% rise compared to the previous week.

French Health Minister Stéphanie Rist confirmed that older adults bore the brunt of the crisis, noting a "clear increase" in deaths among people over the age of 45. The Paris region alone saw a shocking 62% spike in mortality during that stretch. Officials have cautioned that even these figures are likely an underestimate, with the true death toll expected to rise as more data is gathered.

Record Temperatures and Drowning Deaths Add to the Toll

On June 24, France recorded its hottest day ever on a national average basis, with temperatures in Paris climbing to nearly 41°C. At the height of the crisis, half the country was placed under a red heat alert — the most severe warning level available.

Beyond heat-related illness, drowning deaths also surged dramatically during this period. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that at least 72 people had lost their lives to drowning since June 18, highlighting the wide-ranging dangers posed by extreme summer heat.

Belgium

Belgium recorded 1,222 excess deaths during the heatwave — roughly 39% above the seasonal average. Nearly half of those who died were aged 85 and older. The country's health ministry described the scale of mortality as "unprecedented."

The Netherlands

In the Netherlands, authorities reported approximately 480 excess deaths linked to the heatwave, with most victims aged 80 or above. Temperatures approached 40°C in parts of the country, and the highest death tolls were concentrated in the southern and eastern regions where heat was most intense.

More Extreme Heat on the Way for Europe

Despite the devastation already caused, meteorologists are warning that Europe is not out of danger. A large high-pressure system building from the Azores toward Portugal and Spain is expected to push intense heat northward into France and southern Britain by the weekend.

Temperatures across southern France could reach 40°C, with cities such as Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Agen anticipating highs of 36°C to 37°C. Météo-France has already issued red alerts for Friday and Saturday in the country's southern regions, warning that wildfire risk is "very high" relative to typical summer conditions.

Since the start of the summer fire season, nearly 7,000 blazes have broken out across France, burning approximately 8,700 hectares. In one particularly severe incident, around 3,000 residents were evacuated after a wildfire ignited near Sainte-Marie-la-Mer and rapidly spread to the neighboring town of Canet-en-Roussillon.

Iberian Peninsula on High Alert

The extreme heat threat extends well beyond France. Spain's national weather agency, Aemet, has raised the possibility of another major heatwave affecting the Iberian Peninsula. Parts of southwestern Spain are under orange alert, with temperatures forecast to hit 40°C in certain areas.

Portugal's government has declared a formal state of alert, effective until midnight on Tuesday. Forecasts indicate temperatures could exceed 40°C in some regions, with overnight lows remaining above 25°C — a combination that significantly increases health risks, particularly for elderly and vulnerable populations.

Scientists and climate experts are unequivocal: climate change is the primary driver behind the increasing frequency and severity of these extreme heat events. Europe is currently the fastest-warming continent on Earth, heating up at roughly twice the global average rate, according to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service.

This accelerating warming trend is intensifying summer heatwaves, placing greater strain on water resources, and fueling more destructive wildfires across the continent. As this summer's tragic death toll demonstrates, the consequences of rising global temperatures are no longer a distant threat — they are a present and deadly reality.
