England's National Health Service is facing a severe crisis as record-breaking temperatures trigger widespread equipment failures, overwhelmed emergency services, and deteriorating conditions for both patients and staff. Multiple NHS trusts have declared critical incidents, citing the direct impact of the ongoing heatwave on hospital infrastructure and clinical operations.
Equipment Failures Disrupt Critical Medical Services
The extreme heat has caused significant damage to essential medical equipment across hospitals in England. Radiotherapy machines, MRI scanners, and hospital cooling systems have all broken down under the strain of soaring temperatures. In Norfolk, hundreds of patient appointments were cancelled after every MRI scanner at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust stopped functioning. The trust confirmed that the cooling infrastructure responsible for keeping its scanners operational had been compromised by the heat and humidity, leaving its Norwich sites — including the main hospital and community diagnostic centre — without a single working MRI machine.
In Portsmouth, Queen Alexandra Hospital declared a critical incident after multiple chiller units failed, sending temperatures climbing across the entire facility. The breakdown affected digital systems, operating theatres, cardiac catheter laboratories, and diagnostic scanning services. Mark Orchard, the trust's deputy chief executive, described the situation as creating "significant disruption" driven by "unprecedented pressures."
Planned appointments and procedures were cancelled, and patients attending the hospital were urged to bring plenty of water due to the extreme indoor heat.
IT Systems and Laboratories Also at Breaking Point
Beyond physical medical equipment, hospital IT infrastructure has also been severely impacted. One doctor reported that their NHS trust came dangerously close to losing critical server data when IT systems began overheating. Staff were instructed to power down all non-essential computers, electrical devices, and even lights to prevent a total system collapse.
Laboratories used for medical testing were similarly affected, and two linear accelerator machines — vital for delivering cancer treatment — were rendered inoperable by the heat. Despite being part of a relatively modern care facility, the doctor noted it was "tacked on to an old Victorian hospital," highlighting the deep infrastructure challenges facing much of the NHS estate.
Patients and Staff Face Dangerous Conditions
On the wards, conditions have become increasingly dangerous. Elderly patients in at least one geriatric ward were exposed to temperatures reaching 35°C. Even facilities equipped with air conditioning were not immune, as some units had to be shut down proactively to avoid heat-related damage.
Doctors described their workplaces as "unfit to cope," with patients and medical personnel enduring "awful conditions" in sweltering wards, clinics, and corridors. Sleep deprivation has compounded the challenge for NHS staff, many of whom — like the broader UK population — have struggled to rest during the heatwave. Some medical professionals were unable to report to work at all due to school closures affecting their childcare arrangements.
Emergency Services Record Historic Call Volumes
The London Ambulance Service reported its highest ever volume of life-threatening emergency calls in a single day on Wednesday, a surge it attributed directly to the extreme heat. Crews responded to a record 642 category one calls — the most serious tier of incidents, covering cardiac arrests, breathing emergencies, and other immediately life-threatening conditions.
Hospitals have also seen a sharp rise in A&E attendance and admissions, with overcrowding reported in several locations. Older patients are among those most affected, with a number arriving having collapsed or suffering from severe dehydration.
Experts Call for Urgent NHS Reform and Infrastructure Investment
Dr. Hilary Williams, Clinical Vice-President of the Royal College of Physicians, issued a stark warning about the NHS's lack of preparedness for extreme weather events. She pointed to failures across machines, laboratories, kidney dialysis units, and patient services as evidence of a system dangerously ill-equipped to handle the current climate reality.
The Human Cost on NHS Staff
"The impact of heatwaves on staff cannot be overstated," Dr. Williams said. "There is a sense of foreboding when we see the weather forecast, because we know what is to come, and there is very little staff can do."
She also cautioned against overly simplistic solutions, noting that electric fans — often the first suggested remedy — can pose fire risks near oxygen supplies and may contribute to the spread of infection in clinical environments.
A System Already Under Strain
Dr. Williams emphasised that the NHS was already grappling with rising demand and significant workforce shortages before the heatwave arrived. The combination of an ageing building stock and record temperatures has exposed deep vulnerabilities that require more than short-term fixes.
"As clinicians, there are immediate steps we can take to protect patients, such as reviewing medications that affect hydration and ensuring they are stored appropriately," she said. "But this must be matched by system-level change — strengthening infrastructure and embedding resilience into NHS reform."
She called explicitly for hospitals to be upgraded to withstand extreme heat and other climate-related risks, stating firmly: "Hospitals should be places of safety, not settings where extreme heat puts patients and staff at risk."
Government Response
The Department of Health and Social Care confirmed that all NHS trusts are required to have effective contingency plans in place for extreme heat events. A spokesperson said trusts are "urgently coordinating responses to increased demand on health services and protecting vulnerable patients," though critics argue that the scale of this week's failures suggests those plans have fallen well short of what is needed.
