Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy Slams Channel 4 Over MAFS UK Rape Allegations Response
Lisa Nandy has told Channel 4 the government is 'not satisfied' with how the broadcaster has handled serious rape and sexual assault allegations tied to Married at First Sight UK.
Government Turns Up Heat on Channel 4 Over MAFS UK Scandal
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has issued a stark warning to Channel 4, declaring that the government is far from happy with how the broadcaster has responded to grave allegations of rape and sexual assault involving cast members from its hit reality series Married at First Sight UK.
Addressing the House of Commons on Thursday, Nandy made clear that the matter is far from closed, announcing she would be holding further discussions with Channel 4 executives in the days ahead.
What the Allegations Involve
The controversy erupted last month when a BBC Panorama investigation brought to light rape allegations made by two women who had appeared on the show — widely known as MAFS UK. A third woman also claimed she had been subjected to a non-consensual sexual act during filming. All three men named in connection with the allegations have firmly denied any wrongdoing.
Each of the women has separately stated that Channel 4 failed to adequately protect them throughout the process.
Nandy's Statement to Parliament
Speaking directly to fellow MPs, Nandy did not mince her words:
"I know members across this House will be horrified and disgusted at the serious allegations of abuse against women in the TV industry that have emerged recently. Everyone has the right to be safe and treated with dignity. We are not satisfied as a government with the response that we have received, and I will be discussing this further with Channel 4 in the coming week."
BBC News confirmed it had reached out to Channel 4 seeking a response to the Culture Secretary's remarks.
Channel 4's Actions So Far
In the wake of the Panorama broadcast in May, Channel 4 took several steps. The broadcaster removed all episodes of MAFS UK from its on-demand streaming platform and launched an externally led review into how contributors are treated on the show. However, it has indicated it will only release a summary of the review's findings rather than the complete report — a decision likely to attract further scrutiny.
Channel 4 chief executive Priya Dogra initially stopped short of apologising when confronted by journalists following the Panorama broadcast, offering only her sympathy to those who had come forward. However, two days later she issued a more substantial statement, saying she was "deeply sorry" over the rape allegations and acknowledging that the distress expressed by the women was "clear."
Dogra added that while she believed the broadcaster's handling of concerns at the time had been appropriate, she wanted the matter re-examined given her recent appointment to the role.
Wider Fallout
The scandal has triggered responses well beyond parliament. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's official spokesperson described the allegations as "extremely serious" and called for a thorough investigation. Media regulator Ofcom reminded broadcasters of their duty to take proper care of programme participants.
The Metropolitan Police also stepped in, urging anyone who believed they had been a victim of sexual assault in connection with the show to come forward and contact them directly.
On the commercial side, travel giant Tui withdrew its sponsorship from both MAFS UK and its Australian counterpart in the aftermath of the revelations.
Production Company Defends Its Record
Legal representatives for CPL, the independent production house responsible for the UK version of the show, pushed back strongly against the criticism. They described CPL's contributor welfare system as "gold standard" and industry-leading, maintaining that the company had acted appropriately in every case raised.
What Happens Next for the Show
MAFS UK airs in prime time on E4, Channel 4's sister channel, and regularly pulls in audiences of over three million viewers — making it one of the network's most commercially valuable properties. Despite this, Channel 4 has confirmed that no decision has yet been made regarding whether the newest series of the show will go ahead as planned.
